The Basics of Employing Part Time Workers

When dealing with part-time workers it is important to be aware of your legal obligations. Our Your Responsibilities guide will tell you the basics and reading the following page will help too.

It is vital that you treat your part time workers fairly. By law, you have to treat them the same way you do your full-time workers. Part time workers rights include the following:

  • A pay rate that is equal to your other employees
  • Full access to maternity and sick pay
  • The right to join the occupational pension scheme
  • The right to be selected for redundancy
  • The right to the same kinds of career breaks as full time staff
  • Full access to training
  • The same career and promotional opportunities as full time employees
  • The right to be aware of and apply for all vacancies

There are regulations in place to ensure part time workers are treated fairly. It is wise to familiarise yourself with the biggest of these which is The Part-time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000. These regulations include ‘workers’ such as agency temps, seasonal and casual workers.  However, these regulations do not cover any personnel who are genuinely employed as freelancers, contractors or as self-employed people.

Our Rules and Regulations section also covers part time workers and their rights.
