Wills and Probate – Press Information

Hylton-Potts - London Based Law Firm Helping People Across the UK since 1999

You’re thinking of making a will. This is the most boring subject; people are constantly thinking of making a will and then not getting around to it and putting it on one side and who can blame them?

It’s very boring but it is important. A common mistake which I’ve found over the years is making your own will. It’s quite tempting, you can go to a will writer and pay £30, or go down to WH Smith and do it I think for £30 plus VAT now. It’s not a good idea. We had a case last year where somebody did that themselves, and the legal fees later came to £8,000.

We charge £100 plus VAT for one will, and £150 plus VAT for a couple, and what we do is, we do it by email, or if you’d like to meet us, we get you in, put the kettle on, shut off the mobile phone, lock the door almost and sit there until you do it. It’s all done while you wait, and it’s something that’s worth doing, you save tax, it’s nice to have it settled, and you leave more for the family.

If probate’s necessary after somebody dies, banks and solicitors are happy to take your business and charge you 2%. There’s no need for that, it’s a form-filling exercise, you can largely do it yourself with a bit of help from us, and we get the whole thing through in a matter of a month, maybe six weeks tops. Less than £1,000 is the whole cost, and very competitive and painless.
